Microchip Microchipping is a simple and permanent method of identifying your pet that can provide you with peace of mind should your pet become separated from your family. A microchip is a small transponder, about the size of a grain of rice, that is implanted under your pet's skin. For more information you can visit: Home Again. We are now offering registration in the new Home Again comprehensive recovery system. Please let us know if you are interested in enrolling your currently microchipped pet or implanting a chip if your pet is not yet microchipped. Please visit the Home Again website for more info on the program.
The needle that is used to implant the microchip is slightly larger than a needle we would use for vaccinations and this can be done during any routine examination. We will frequently recommend implanting a microchip while your pet is under anesthesia such as for a spay or neuter procedure so that they do not experience any discomfort, but anesthesia is definitely not necessary.
The microchip can be read by scanners in any veterinary or SPCA facility. When the microchip is read, the facility calls a toll free number that will facilitate notification of the owner that the pet has been located. We strongly recommend microchips for pets who spend a large amount of time unsupervised outside or those who travel, however it can be an important means of identification for any pet as we have seen with such events as Hurricane Katrina.
Tattooing We have equipment at our facility that allows us to tattoo your pet with identifying information such as their registration number or a driver's license number. We can use any combination of numbers and letters that you wish, however if you wish to use this for verification of your ownership, we recommend a number that you can use as proof. This is another simple and permanent method of identification that you can use either alone or in conjunction with a microchip.
This is a relatively painless process, but requires your pet to spend some amount of time on their back or side and tolerate the vibration of the needle, so sometimes it does require light sedation and again can be performed under anesthesia.
If you are interested in tattooing, please ask prior to scheduling. We are still practicing with our equipment, so we have the capabilities however it is still a newer procedure for us.
